BANYAN SHIPS VINES 5, VINES 10, AND VINES 20:
NETWORK SOLUTIONS FOR ENTERPRISES OF ANY SIZE
North American Distribution Channel
Expanded to Accommodate New Offerings
WESTBORO, Mass., February 10, 1992 -- Banyan Systems today
introduced and is now shipping BANYAN VINES 5, VINES 10, and VINES
20. These versions of the VINES network operating system
economically provide the full range of VINES network services
and functionality to small and mid-sized enterprises and
organizations needing to connect groups of 5, 10, or 20 users to
each other. Banyan also announced the expansion of its North
American reseller channel to sell and support these products.
"Complex networking problems are not unique to large corporations.
Small and medium-sized enterprises face the same local and
wide-area networking problems every day," said James D. D'Arezzo,
Banyan vice president, marketing. "Customers deserve the best
enterprise networking solutions at the most affordable prices. Now,
with VINES 5, VINES 10, and VINES 20, we can give them the powerful
yet cost-effective solutions they have been seeking."
Why VINES 5, VINES 10, and VINES 20
VINES 5, VINES 10, and VINES 20 leverage Banyan's historic
strengths in enterprise networking to extend the company's
client-server product orientation from large installations to the
level of small to moderately sized enterprises and departments, as
well as remote offices of any size.
Although they may have fewer people to connect, these organizations
often have complex computing and networking requirements like
Banyan's traditionally larger VINES customers. Besides scalability
(the ability to grow to any size easily) and functionality, these
requirements may include multiple servers and workstations,
network-based mission-critical software applications, as well as
LAN (Local-Area Network) and WAN (Wide-Area Network) connections.

"Now Banyan provides small to medium-sized enterprises the same
high quality LAN and WAN solutions that our larger customers have
depended upon for years," D'Arezzo said. "At the same time, we give
them the ability to cost-effectively grow their networks as large
and as fast as they want -- easily and without writing off past
investments."
Product Overview: VINES 5, VINES 10, and VINES 20
VINES 5, VINES 10, and VINES 20 have the same complete
functionality as VINES Unlimited. VINES Unlimited is Banyan's
technologically advanced networking system, delivering extensive
fully-integrated network services to unlimited numbers of users.
VINES integrated services include global directory, multiple levels
of security control, local and wide area communications, messaging,
time, file, and print. Other important common attributes are ease
of installation and expansion, ease of use and administration,
interoperability among all VINES Version 4.X and 5.X servers, and
the ability to support more than a thousand popular software
applications for DOS, Windows, OS/2, and Macintosh environments.
Whether they prefer VINES 5, VINES 10, or VINES 20, customers may
choose the following VINES releases which provide comprehensive,
fully integrated services -- like the StreetTalk Global Directory
Service -- and which are interoperable and capable of residing on
the same VINES network at the same time.
* VINES Version 4.11, providing expanded access to
state-of-the-art computing platforms and peripherals.
(Now shipping.)
* VINES Version 4.10 for French-, German-, and Spanish-
speaking users. (Now shipping.)
* VINES Version 5.0, offering Macintosh support and new levels
of VINES network functionality. (Available 2nd quarter 1992,
English and translated versions.)
VINES 5, VINES 10, and VINES 20, like VINES Unlimited and VINES
SMP, support identical VINES software and hardware options, local
and wide-area server-to-server communications, local and wide-area
networking configurations, industry-standard communications to
mainframes and minicomputers, and a host of peripheral devices.
Customers may use any of more than 180 Banyan-certified Intel 386
or i486 based computing platforms as a network server for any VINES
product.

connected directly to VINES network servers.
As is the case with all VINES products, the unique StreetTalk
Global Directory Service is a standard feature included at no extra
charge. Integrated with all VINES network services, StreetTalk
enables anyone or any computer resource on a VINES network to
access any other user, application, or resource easily, directly
and instantaneously from any PC or terminal anywhere on the

To make VINES 5, VINES 10, and VINES 20 available to the widest

selling VINES 5, VINES 10, VINES 20, selected VINES software
options, VINES software subscriptions, Banyan ICA (Intelligent
Communications Adaptor) cards, and Banyan documentation. (See
accompanying press release on Banyan's expanded channel structure.)

Subscriptions and Upgrades
Banyan is extending the current VINES subscription program to cover
VINES 5, VINES 10, and VINES 20 products in addition to other VINES

minor and update software releases plus the opportunity to purchase
major software upgrades at significantly discounted prices.
As with all other VINES offerings, VINES 5, VINES 10, and VINES 20
